On 14 November 2026, IILAT, in collaboration with Inner Temple, the ICC Bar Association and the ICC Office of the Prosecutor, deliver a one-day advocacy training on examining vulnerable witnesses at the ICC.
The day combines plenary talks by a psychologist and experienced advocates, a dedicated session on interpretation and vulnerable witnesses, a panel discussion held before the practical exercises, and two rounds of advocacy exercises using a mock case scenario and amateur actors, with feedback given using the Hampel Method.
The training is aimed at prosecutors, defence counsel and legal representatives of victims with at least five years' practising experience. It provides an unparallelled opportunity for these experienced advocates to enhance their advocacy skills in examining and cross-examining vulnerable witnesses, with particular emphasis on trauma-informed approaches for witnesses living with PTSD.
Participation in the training is limited to 24 participants. ICCBA, via IILAT will select 14 ICCBA members to represent Defence and Victims representatives, while the OTP will internally select participants with appropriate experience. We strive to ensure equal representation in terms of gender and geographical distribution. The training is free of charge.
The training will take place over one full day. Participants must attend the entire training. Upon completion, they will be awarded a certificate of participation.
