Our Story

IILAT succeeds The Advocacy Club, which was founded by Kamran Choudhry and Johann Soufi in 2013 in The Hague. These practitioners saw a growing need for courtroom advocacy training in the context of international criminal courts and tribunals. The Advocacy Club has organised free courses and trainings for hundreds of advocates and aspiring advocates in The Hague in single lectures and multi-day courses.

Training events were held at all major tribunals, including the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Court. Its work came to be internationally recognised and received support and sponsorship from institutions such as The Inns of Court College of Advocacy in the United Kingdom.

With the proliferation of international and internationalised courts and a growing need for structured oral courtroom and written advocacy and legal training, the Advocacy Club extended its areas of work and re-structured its operations. It is now a formal foundation registered in The Netherlands under a new name: the Institute for International Legal and Advocacy Training (IILAT). It continues in its mission to raise the standard of advocacy before international and internationalised courts and tribunals.
